Editorial standards

Crowned Continent exists to make African history accessible, accurate and engaging.

How we work

  1. Prioritise African historians, universities, primary sources, archaeology and peer-reviewed research.
  2. Distinguish established evidence, scholarly debate, oral tradition and legend.
  3. Name authors and reviewers and display publication and revision dates.
  4. Connect historical territories to modern geography without treating them as identical.
  5. Use historically appropriate African place names and contextualise colonial terminology.
  6. Correct errors openly through a visible corrections record.

Article standard

Major articles include a summary, location, period, historical account, society, economy, culture, achievements, transformation, legacy, key-event timeline, image credits, sources and further reading.

Source priorities

African scholarship; primary historical sources; archaeological research; peer-reviewed publications; UNESCO’s General History of Africa; museums, archives and carefully evaluated oral traditions.
