About

Crowned Continent is a home for Africa’s vast, brilliant and unfinished story. We exist to help people discover a history deeper than the fragments too often presented to the world—and to make that knowledge accessible with evidence, dignity and pride.

Our Mission

Our mission is to discover, examine and share the true history of Africa: a human story shaped by ancient civilisations, powerful kingdoms, centres of learning, trade networks, artists, builders, scientists, spiritual traditions, resistance movements and ordinary communities whose work still influences the world.

We bring together archaeology, written records, oral traditions, material culture and modern scholarship. We seek evidence rather than myth, context rather than stereotype, and understanding rather than stories of perfect heroes or absolute villains.

Crowned Continent is for young people meeting African history for the first time, families reconnecting with heritage, teachers seeking richer material, researchers sharing evidence and readers everywhere who want to learn with curiosity and respect.

Africa’s history did not begin when others arrived. It began with humanity—and its story is still being written.

Why Crowned Continent Was Created

Crowned Continent was created because Africa deserves to be encountered in its full scale. Too often, its history is introduced through enslavement, colonialism, poverty or conflict. These subjects must be studied honestly, but they are chapters—not the opening page and never the whole book.

Before foreign conquest, African societies governed cities, negotiated diplomacy, taught in centres of scholarship, developed technologies, moved ideas across deserts and oceans, created extraordinary art and built political systems suited to their own environments. After conquest, Africans did not disappear from history: they resisted, adapted, preserved knowledge, rebuilt nations and transformed the wider world.

The crown in our name does not belong only to rulers. It represents dignity, inheritance and responsibility. Every African child should know that their history contains achievement and difficulty, wisdom and debate, courage and creativity. Pride built on evidence is stronger than pride built on legend. Our purpose is not to replace one distortion with another; it is to restore complexity, agency and truth.

Our Sources

A powerful history must rest on trustworthy foundations. We prioritise African historians and institutions, primary documents, archaeology, peer-reviewed scholarship, museum and archive collections, historical linguistics, material culture and carefully evaluated oral traditions.

  • Primary evidence: inscriptions, manuscripts, correspondence, legal records, objects, architecture, maps and contemporary testimony.
  • Archaeology and material culture: evidence recovered from landscapes, settlements, monuments and everyday objects.
  • Oral history and tradition: knowledge assessed in its cultural setting and compared with other evidence.
  • African scholarship: research produced by African historians, universities, archives, museums and knowledge keepers.
  • Peer-reviewed research: scholarship used to explain evidence, disagreement and changing interpretation.

Sources can disagree. Records written by conquerors, colonial officials or political rivals may contain valuable facts and serious bias. We make those limits visible, distinguish evidence from interpretation and acknowledge uncertainty when the record does not permit certainty.

Contributors

Crowned Continent is strengthened by many kinds of knowledge. Our growing community may include historians, archaeologists, educators, writers, editors, translators, librarians, archivists, artists, photographers, community historians and readers who identify errors or bring overlooked evidence to our attention.

We especially value contributors with deep knowledge of African regions, languages and communities. Expertise is not measured only by distance from the subject. Local archives, family collections, oral testimony and community memory can illuminate questions that national or colonial records overlook—when handled with care, consent and critical method.

Contributors are expected to respect evidence, disclose conflicts of interest, accept editorial review and write in language that informs rather than diminishes. The purpose is shared: to make African history more accurate, more accessible and more alive.

Become a Contributor

If you carry knowledge that can strengthen Crowned Continent, we invite you to help build this public record. You may propose an article, review an existing page, recommend sources, translate material, contribute a teaching resource or identify a subject that deserves greater attention.

  1. Introduce yourself and your relevant experience or connection to the subject.
  2. Describe the article, correction, source or resource you wish to contribute.
  3. Include reliable references or explain the provenance of oral or community evidence.
  4. Confirm that submitted work is original and that image or document rights are clear.

We welcome established specialists and serious new voices. A famous name is not required; intellectual honesty, respect for evidence and willingness to collaborate are essential. Write to editorial@crownedcontinent.com with the subject line “Contributor proposal”.

Corrections Policy

History grows stronger when evidence is tested openly. Crowned Continent welcomes corrections, source recommendations and responsible challenges to interpretation. Correcting the record is not a weakness; it is part of respecting the past and the people whose lives we describe.

When a concern is received, we review the article, examine the supplied evidence and consult additional sources where necessary. Clear factual errors are corrected promptly. Significant changes should be recorded transparently. Where scholars reasonably disagree, the article should represent the debate instead of presenting one interpretation as unquestionable fact.

Send the article link, the passage concerned, your proposed correction and supporting evidence to editorial@crownedcontinent.com. Personal disagreement without evidence may be noted, but corrections are decided through verifiable historical reasoning.
